What’s a zombie roofer’s favorite material?

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Membraaanes. Especially ice and water protection membranes.

Roof ice dam, icicles

OK... bad joke. But we wanted to get your attention because this roofing material is crucial for a roof that will stand the test of time and mother nature. It provides an added layer of protection against... you guessed it, ice and water damage. Up here in Massachusetts, the biggest culprits of this type of damage are ice dams. In other areas of the country, severe weather can cause the same damage. But this waterproof shield can resist even the toughest climate, so it’s important that the roofing contractor of your choice is knowledgeable about where and how to install this product.

In most cases, the ice and water shield is installed along roof overhangs and valleys. In some situations, installations can be done across the entirety of the roof, but the home attic must be properly vented for this application. Full-roof installation is usually reserved for areas frequently hit by severe rain and wind storms like hurricanes, but it can also come down to home owner preference and budget. One thing that many people do not know, is that insurance will often not cover wind-driven rain damage (more on this topic in a future blog post!), making this added precaution in coastal communities well worth the investment.

We could go on, (because who doesn’t love roofing blogs!) but the key takeaways are:

1. Details matter when it comes to a quality roof installation

2. Ice and water shield is super important

3. Hiring a contractor that understands where and how to install the ice and water shield is even more important.

We know a low price tag is important, but when you’re hiring a roofing contractor please don’t skimp on the details because you will pay for it later.

Over and out.
